Albufeira is a Portuguese city in the district of Faro. It is also one of the Algarve region’s most popular tourist destinations. Albufeira has a population of approximately 35,281. However, this population expands considerably during the tourist season - with an estimated 300,000 people living in and around the city. Tourism is the main source of income for most of the people that live and work in Albufeira. However, Albufeira was originally a fishing village and there are still a few locals that ply this trade. Drive a little further out of Albufeira and you will find the mountains of the Faro region dotted with picturesque, whitewashed Moorish villages. These villages hint at the importance of the fishing and farming industry before the introduction of tourism in the area.
